Halloween Fun

Witches, goblins, ghouls, and "Sugar"  (Pete Bullock 1505S) could be found at the Halloween Happy Hour, which was a great beginning to the Tiara Social Season for 2014-2015!      It was hard to get an exact count of attendees since the fifty-plus (50+) residents and owners kept moving around, visiting with old friends and making new ones.    Continue reading

Tiara Brunch Potluck

The first-ever outdoors get-together this season (2013-2014) was a great success.     The party was held in the North Party Room with tables set up in the Party Room and also outdoors around the pool and in the pergola.    The weather cooperated and brought us a sunny, warm day with only moderate breezes, and many persons were able to take their Brunch outdoors and sit poolside.    In all, 68 persons attended.     The food was fabulous and filling; the conversation even better.

Fantastic International Day Dinner!

INTERNATIONAL DAY DINNER – A Great Time Was Had By ALL !!

The International Day Dinner was held on the evening of Thursday, March 13th, in the North Party Room.  The evening was a huge success with a large array of international meals prepared by our residents.  There was plenty of food, drinks and music with a rousing sing-along led by Carol Mazza on her Keyboard.  We had a large turnout of seventy (70) attendees that was well represented by 35 attendees from the South building and 35 from the North building.  A 50/50 raffle was held with Tom Hubbard and Bob Smith conducting this event.  The winning individual number was held by Vince and Terri Pennisi who won $70.  The other half of the winnings go into the Tiara Social Fund to help defray expenses.

The variety of food meals was truly spectacular.  Italian foods included Lasagna, spicy Sausage and green peppers, Strombolli, Tortellina salad, and Italian asparagus salad.  Then there were several Polish dishes to include Kielbasa and stuffed cabbage and Irish dishes of Shepards Pie and Irish soda bread.  There were several Mexican preparations, Swedish meatballs, Indian chicken Marsala, Thai noodles with chicken, Japanese Tonkatsu pork and Soba noodles, Sushi, good old American baked ham, and from our Canadian friends – Canadian EH(?) .. still haven’t figured out what this was.  Many others ranging from vegetable dishes, shrimp , chicken dishes, short ribs, and of course Tom Hubbards famous Ceasar salad.  Afterwards, for dessert, there was chocolate mousse cake, bakalava, apple and lemon pies.

Carol Mazza was great on the keyboard.  After eating, she passed out song sheets and  everyone joined in a sing along.  Carol continued playing to a small group of die hard songsters who sang along with her until the party broke up later that evening (about 10 pm).  At one point, she played a lively polka which prompted Bob and Debra Liepa and Al and Shirley Alvandian to jump into action, dancing across the floor.

Shirley Alvandian chaired this event with Mil Mealey co-chairing.  Many thanks go to the committee members who worked with them – Mary Masciana, Debra Liepa, Betty Russo, Linda Dicker, and Rosemary Smith.  And not to forget, all those who helped set up for the event and those that pitched in to clean up and restore everything after it was over.  Also, thanks to Bill Normington and Steve Kura for help preparing the room and getting the chairs and tables.  And a big THANKS to all those who prepared the many international dishes and foods.

Judging from the after-event  comments, everyone had a real enjoyable time.  The food was delicious and the camaraderie was evident.

2014 Social Calendar

The Social Activities for 2014 are now in full swing.    The Welcome Back happy hour, held January 17th, in the North Club Room, was attended by 60+ persons, all of whom enjoyed the food and the opportunity to reconnect with other residents here at Tiara.    Quite a few folks stayed until 9 pm, way later than most parties last, visiting and catching up on friends' activities.

Bridge players meet every Monday evening in the South Club Room at 7 pm.  Everyone is welcome and you don't need to have a partner.

Monday afternoon, January 20th, will be the first Canasta game of the season.  Everyone is welcome to come to the North Club Room at 1 pm for card-playing and conversation.

Planning is underway for the Super Bowl party and the Super Bowl Football pool.  Watch for the announcements in the mailrooms this week.  Super Bowl Sunday is February 2nd.

The Social Committee met and planned activities for the full 2014 season.  It's going to be a busy time with activities and entertainment options for everyone.

Golf is in full swing, both ladies' and men's outings.    There's no one committee for golf but I suggest that if you're interested in golfing that you contact Carol Mazza (for a ladies outing), or Ken Tangora, George Monter, or Jim Mikesh for information about men's outings.

Bicycle Storage Reminder

Hobby Room and Bicycle Reminders

At the last Board of Directors meeting it was mentioned that some bikes in the hobby rooms have been inadvertently damaged.  We are reminded to use extra care in the hobby room because of the limited space available for grocery carts, bookshelves and bikes.

Please review the bike policy and these reminders:

  • All bicycles must have a Tiara registration sticker (Blue).  See Bill Normington for stickers.  Unregistered bikes will be removed if a violation notice is ignored.
  • Bicycle storage capacity in the hobby rooms is limited to rack capacity (one bike per double bar wheel support).
  • Please do not place bikes in spaces between the double bars.
  • If the hobby room is at bicycle capacity please place your bike in the bottom of the north or south stairwell until a vacancy occurs in the hobby room.
  • Please exercise caution with bike placement or removal from rack to prevent damage to surrounding bikes (especially wheel spokes).
  • Please do not place grocery carriages near bikes or in front of the bookshelves.
  • Please do not place unwanted items or empty cardboard boxes on the shelf near the utility sink as the inevitable removal of these items causes additional work for Bill or Steve.

Thank you for your cooperation.  Questions – please call one of the following committee members.

Bicycle Committee: John Rowinski, Linda Dicker, Bill Dicker

Windy Day in April

It was a windy day, April 23rd, around 1:12 pm, at Meadowood Golf and Country Club. Four men bravely stood on the tee at the fourth hole, staring over the water, at the tiny green, and the challenges facing them. A thirty knot breeze staring them in the face.  Continue reading
